What makes The Freelance Media Network unique and different to other media groups?

Curious about The Freelance Media Network? This blog digs into what it’s all about…

Here’s what you can expect from The Freelance Media Network:

A curated membership of active media professionals
Membership will be on application - not just invite like it can be on Facebook. There will be a short form to fill out to join the membership so you can be sure those joining are active media professionals. As you’ll know if you’re in a Facebook group, there are often lapsed members, or those who lurk… not everyone in a group is there with the right intentions. With a curated membership on Circle the plan is that members will be engaged and involved - to share and grow their careers.

Clear areas - not one long feed
Circle has different areas - rooms, essentially. The FMN rooms will include a space for PRs to share their client news, journalists to share pitches, a jobs board and the ‘watercooler’ for general chat. There will be areas to introduce yourself and share wins, too. The Freelance Media Network will go way beyond the scroll of a Facebook feed. Think of it as moving from a village hall to a multi-room co-working space.

Media professionals across all media
Not just journos or PRs - this platform will be open to anyone working in the media, including designers, art directors, sub editors, videographers, photographers and editors/commissioning editors across all types of desk from news outlets and magazines to radio and TV. The goal is the unique cross-collaboration that can come from blending people across all media roles. The podcaster who needs a blog writer, the commissioning editor who needs an expert for a feature, the designer who can help a journalist with their new logo, or the PR who can help a radio journalist with a last-minute guest.

Dedicated jobs board
Jobs that are spotted by me, by our members and also added to the network as bonafide adverts. Jobs will range from freelance shout outs spotted on social media to fixed term contracts and full time roles. Again, they’ll be across the media, rather than just editorial shout outs or writing jobs.

Weekly co-working
A chance to network with trusted individuals, get to know them and make connections - and get some work done!

Workshops and courses
Workshops will cost £10 for members (£25 for non members) and will be led by me, a trained and experienced career and business coach (more about that here). Workshops will be interactive and will include LinkedIn confidence for freelance journalists, LinkedIn confidence for media professionals and social media confidence. Courses - to work on at your own speed - will also be loaded in future months and will be available exclusively to members including LinkedIn confidence, Instagram confidence and pitching yourself for work.

Events and meet ups
One of the big longer term goals of the FMN is to have meet ups. Being part of the network from the start puts you in pole position to join in. I also hope to be able to run live Q&A sessions with members who are open to sharing their insight and experiences.
